Lesson 4: Weekly Planning That Keeps Your Pivot on Track

Weekly planning is the bridge between your long-term pivot vision and

your daily actions. Without it, you can work hard every day and still

drift away from your most important priorities --- because busyness and

productivity are not the same thing. The weekly planning session ---

done right --- is the single practice that most consistently keeps pivot

leaders moving in the right direction at the right pace.

My weekly planning session happens every Sunday evening or Monday

morning. It takes thirty to forty-five minutes, and it covers three

things: review of last week, preview of this week, and alignment check

between this week's plan and my quarterly goals.

The last week review asks: What did I accomplish? What did I miss and

why? What was my energy and focus level? What pattern do I notice? I

spend ten minutes on this and write honest, brief answers. The pattern

recognition is the most valuable part --- if I notice I consistently

miss the same type of task or feel low energy on the same types of work,

that's data that tells me something about my systems, priorities, or

energy management.

The this week preview asks: What are the most important things I need to

accomplish this week to move my pivot forward? Not everything that could

get done --- the three to five things that must get done. I put those at

the top of my weekly plan and schedule specific time blocks for them

before anything else touches my calendar.

The alignment check asks: Are this week's priorities actually connected

to my quarterly goals? This is the most important check of all, because

it is very easy to be productive on things that don't matter. Staying

busy with low-value tasks creates the illusion of progress without the

reality. The alignment check is reality testing --- does this week's

work actually move the pivot?

Gary Keller, in The ONE Thing, writes about the power of identifying the

single most important priority and structuring your time around it. His

central insight is that extraordinary results require extraordinary

focus --- and most people dilute their focus so broadly that they

achieve ordinary results even with significant effort. Your weekly

planning is where you apply that principle: what is the ONE THING this

week that, if done, makes everything else easier or unnecessary?

"A week without a plan is a week of reaction. A week with a clear plan

is a week of creation. Choose creation --- every single week." ---

Marques Ogden

Key Takeaway: Conduct a thirty-to-forty-five-minute weekly planning

session that reviews last week, previews this week's three to five

priority tasks, and checks alignment between weekly work and quarterly

pivot goals.

Reflection Questions:

1\. Do you currently do any form of weekly planning? If yes, how closely

does your week actually follow that plan? If no, what does a typical

unplanned week feel like?

2\. When you look at last week, what percentage of your time was spent

on your actual highest priorities versus reactive tasks and

interruptions?

3\. What is the ONE THING this week --- the single activity that, if

done excellently, would most advance your pivot --- and have you

scheduled it yet?

Application Questions

1\. Conduct your weekly planning session this week using the three-part
framework: last week review, this week preview, and alignment check.
Write it out completely and bring your weekly plan to class.
2\. Review your last three weeks of calendar. What percentage of your
time was on your highest-priority pivot activities versus email,
meetings, and reactive tasks? Write the percentage and commit to one
specific change for next week.
3\. Identify your ONE THING for this week --- the single most important
pivot activity --- and block a two-hour window for it as the first work
block Monday morning. Protect it from all interruptions.
